I’m grateful for music, for songs and instrumental pieces, for moving lyrics and driving rhythms, from opera to post-hardcore, even those ear-worms that get stuck in your head for days. Music has always been a part of my life. I remember our big old phonograph/radio playing Johnny Mathis records at Christmas, listening to the radio in the car, singing in choirs at church and at school – I even majored in music knowing full well that I would not pursue a profession in it, but because it was the foremost joy in my life. Now I don’t sing as much as I used to, except to myself, but I listen to the Moana soundtrack and belt out “We Know the Way,” in the car, or Dance Gavin Dance‘s “We Own the Night,” or Steam Powered Giraffe‘s “Brass Goggles.” I still hum hymns to myself for comfort or sing Mozart’s “Deh Vieni Non Tardar” in the shower.
Music is an ever-present force in my life – it makes me happy.
