I’m grateful for snow, its soft pretty flakes, its hush and blanketed quiet, its cold and dark and its gentle outline tracing the world in white. I love the anticipation of snow, will it come…will it stick? It means slowing down, moving more carefully with deliberation and mindfulness, taking your time and thinking ahead. Snow means playfulness, snowballs and snowmen, snow angels and videos of animals and kids experiencing its cold delight for the first time. I love snow.
But I have a warm home, dry clothes, hot food and good books with which to enjoy the winter weather. Not everyone is so blessed and I am mindful of this side of the coin even as I reflect kindly on the snow. I think of those who must live in nature’s icebox at this time of year, the half frozen, dirty, icy slush everywhere radiating cold and wet, making it difficult to find safe, dry places to find shelter.
I would be grateful if you would keep the people of the street in mind, maybe reach out with a cup of coffee, a blanket or some socks, a kind word and a smile. And say a little prayer for hope, comfort, and peace. The snow will be more beautiful for it, I know.
