I’m grateful for crayons. There’s something magical about a brand new box of crayons, all the tips perfectly sharpened, the paper wrappers smooth and clean, all that potential in a little cardboard box. You can do amazing things with crayons: you can draw in crayon then watercolor paint on top – the wax is resistant to the watercolor; you can heat or melt crayon for a liquid effect; you can cover a page with color, layer another color over it, then scratch a design in the top layer to reveal the original colors beneath; or you can just draw whatever your imagination can produce.
One of my favorite crayon projects is to decorate Easter eggs – after hard boiling the eggs and while they are still hot, sprinkle them with little bits of grated crayon and the colors will melt and blend on the surface of the eggshell – beautiful!
Save up all the final nubby crayon bits, melt them down, pour over wood shavings in an egg carton to make firestarters for Girl Scouts…
