Today we celebrated Mother’s Day at the Zoo. There were marigolds and petunia plants for mothers to take home, crafts and activities like bouncy houses, a trampoline; vendors like Smiths Brothers and Kind Bars; there were performances by a karate academy, a gymnastic group, and a hulau, among others; and mothers all came in half price. One of the booths was run by our own horticulture team – Ask a Zoo Gardner. They had some really cool plants – a coffee bush with ripening beans, a type of pitcher plant, bromeliads and orchids. This was also the premiere of the new history of Woodland Park Zoo book and the collaborators who authored it were on hand to autograph copies for a limited time.
Despite all the preparation and remarkably good weather, the turnout wasn’t very high – it was almost like a regular day. I worked at the Carousel with another coworker – there was supposed to be three of us but one of our team sprained her ankle on the way to work. She tried to walk it off so she could stay, but she was in a great deal of pain so her roommate was called to come pick her up – still we only had 80 runs all day, so we were fine with just two of us – heal quickly, Aliya!!
