The Great Admissions Reading Challenge 2: Book 2: I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

I’ve loved Maya Angelou’s poetry and her beautiful voice since I first heard her speak at a writer’s symposium I attended while in College. I had read this book years ago, but it still amazes and speaks to me today. This first book in a series of seven is autobiographical, depicting her early years, her challenging childhood, moving from home to home, dealing with racism, poverty and victimization, and relating how her experiences helped her grow into a self-possessed young woman despite those challenges. What strength it must have taken to open up her life and share her experiences for others to read and what a gift and blessing her words and story have become to those who identify with the hardships she suffered and survived.

Completed 11/1/17; point balance 13.5
