I think I first read Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women when I was 14; it’s a very different experience at age 48. At 14 I was struck by the romance and character of each girl, broken-hearted at Beth’s condition and dismayed when the story didn’t pan out the way I expected in the end. After years of experience and sorrows of my own I felt much deeper connections with these women, aching for their frailties and struggles, appreciating their wit and strengths better, and taking in the final chapters with greater understanding and acceptance.
