William Makepeace Thackeray’s Vanity Fair is long and often tedious, and as I forced myself to push on through the pettiness and pomp of 19th century British aristocracy, as well as the narrator’s irritating habit of addressing the reader directly, I came to be intrigued, almost against my own will, in the intermingled lives of the characters within. Having set myself the challenge, I’m glad I finished it, particularly as the very last chapter brought me some satisfaction in the culmination of one particular set of characters.
